On this work I have depicted the in 1905 built s.s. Duymaer van Twist, one of the many ships owned and operated by the Dutch shipping company KPM (Royal Packet Navigation Company) in Amsterdam but used on the companies extensive network in the Indonesia. It was, like many of the KPM vessels, not a very large ship, around dwt 2000 but had a capacity to carry nearly 2500 passengers (mostly carries as deck passengers) and their luckage and cargo.

He was born in Amsterdam, engaged in a seaman's career but due to family circumstance had to stop this. Studied then at the Graphical School in Amsterdam, and became an industrial photographer. He lived and worked in France, Italy and Spain. and because his job traveled to many countries. The last years of his working live he was engaged as a professional truck driver, this for a change. After his retirement he decided to settle in the Philippines, this on advise of his wife. Now he has more time to be active in his real artistic love, drawing and illustrating his day dreams. Because of his many years engaged as a photographer he has a large amount of photos which he often use as example for his drawings and illustrations.
