Die Leiden des jungen Werthers lautet der ursprüngliche Titel des von Johann Wolfgang Goethe verfassten Briefromans, in dem der junge Rechtspraktikant Werther bis zu seinem Suizid über seine unglückliche Liebesbeziehung zu der mit einem anderen Mann verlobten Lotte berichtet. Er wurde 1774 veröffentlicht und war nach dem nationalen Erfolg des Dramas Götz von Berlichingen (1773) Goethes zweiter großer, jetzt sogar europäischer Erfolg. Beide Werke sind der literarischen Strömung des Sturm und Drang zuzuordnen.

The Sorrows of Young Werther is the original title of the epistolary novel written by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, in which the young legal intern Werther reports on his unhappy love affair with Lotte, who is engaged to another man, until his suicide. It was published in 1774 and was Goethe's second major, now even European, success after the national success of the drama Götz von Berlichingen (1773). Both works can be assigned to the literary movement of Sturm und Drang.
