The formula panta rhei (ancient Greek πάντα ῥεῖ 'everything flows') is an aphorism to characterize Heraclitean teaching. It is traced back to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, suggested by Plato (in the dialogue Cratylus), but appears literally for the first time in the late antique Neoplatonist Simplikios. This formulaic summary of Heraclitus's ideas was already in use in Augustan times. Its Latin translation (cuncta fluunt) can be found in the 15th book of the Metamorphoses in the “Speech of Pythagoras”, in which Ovid presents the natural-philosophical foundation of his Metamorphoses.
