Inspired by Memento Mori from the Renaissance, this piece is painted on an oval canvas, to represent an oval wall mirror. The imagery represents time, life, death, and the afterlife. Inspired by Memento Mori from the Renaissance, this piece is painted on an oval canvas, to represent an oval wall mirror. The imagery represents time, life, death, and the afterlife. What the skeleton holds in his hands is a paper with a popular saying in Latin America, "Aunque la mona se vista de seda, mona se queda" (Even if the monkey dresses in silk, she stays a monkey.) As a gay man, I've often observed and been disturbed by how much emphasis many gay men put into their physical appearance while very often disregarding their own personalities and human nature. Furthermore, they belittle and criticise other gay men who don't live up to their standards of beauty. These vain gay men should have this "mirror" painting so they could look at themselves and be reminded that beneath our skin we are all the same, that we al are mortal, and that even if the monkey dresses in silk, she is still a monkey.
