SHAHABUDDIN, est né en 1950 à Dacca au Bangladesh. Diplômé des écoles nationale des Beaux-arts de Dacca (1973) et de Paris (1974-1981) il vit et travaille dans la capitale depuis cette date. Jeune leader étudiant, Shahabuddin prit activement part au Mouvement de Libération du Bangladesh en 1971 et reçut en 2000 le prix national de la paix (plus haute distinction de son pays natal). Sa réputation d’artiste est internationale, plusieurs de ses oeuvres figurent dans les collections permanentes du musée national du Bangladesh à Dacca, mais aussi du musée olympique de Lausanne en Suisse… Ses expositions les plus récentes ont eu lieu en France, en Espagne, en Inde et au Bangladesh. Humain ou animal, le corps et sa chair sont au coeur de l’oeuvre du peintre. La rapidité du trait s’escrime avec la puissance du modelage. Leur duel insuffle rythme et intensité au sujet isolé sur la toile enduite mais nue; son rappel à l’intemporalité. La peinture de Shahabuddin est le défi du vivant à son effacement. Le peintre combat: «concentration des moyens, économie des forces, liberté d’action », dixit César. L’Histoire ne nous dit pas que ce dernier fut un peintre mais son legs de pensée ouvre bien une voie plus pacifique à l’homme de l’art sur sa surface privilégiée. Chaque toile de Shahabuddin est un magnifique engagement physique arraché à l’énergie créatrice du peintre. La touche très nerveuse amplifie le mouvement. Les attitudes violentes, impulsives, voire exacerbées transcendent le réel. Le corps agit et révèle forces et tensions, efforts et souffrances; par lui surgit le mythe prométhéen. Le travail de Shahabuddin est une remontée aux sources qui interroge tant l’opposition que les liens entre corps et âme, nature et humanité.
