Yelena Mazour-Matusevich
My inspiration is medieval art of illumination. As a professional medievalist I have published over fifty scholarly articles, and three books.
As an artist I am just trying to be true to myself. If one can tell certain influences in my work, they are not intentional. More than anything I love flowers and cats. It certainly shows in my paintings. I love working on commissions, and I have worked in illustrations. I wrote, illustrated and published a children's book, and regularly worked as an illustrator for CrossCurrents magazine in New York. I attended an art school in St. Petersburg, Russia as a child, but my first exhibit took place in France, where I moved as a young person. While living in France I led the career of a professional artist, having regular exhibits and shows while working on commission. Later I moved to Alaska. I had exhibits in Aix-en-Provence, Alaska , Portland, Oregon and St. Petersburg, Russia.
I paint whenever I can and wherever I can. Not having a studio or even a space to work in, my main medium is acrylic (it dries fast!). Having a regular income as a university professor, I mostly donate the income from the sale of my paintings to environmental causes and to help Ukraine fight Putin's regime, which threatens the very life on this planet.
