After a painting (1533) by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472- 1553): one of a number on the same theme by the same artist and his studio. I have always liked this one because of its medieval composition, the sinuous, snake-like form of Eve, and the fact that she has an apple in reserve. CRISPR-Cas9, a highly successful genome editing technology introduced by Jennifer Doudna and others (details of which, including published papers, are easily sourced on the web), has ethical implications for human germ line research: that is, making permanent, heritable changes to the human genome. Since I am familiar with the technique as a scientist, and I am also a painter, I put both interests together in this work. The mosaicism of Adam references a cellular phenomenon associated with CRISP-Cas9. Ink, "Ergosoft" aquarelle, and Japanese ground colors on canvas over MDF panel.
