Walter Barrientos est né le 11 juillet 1960 à Cuzco au Pérou.
Il vit et travaille actuellement à Toulouse.
Originaire du Pérou, Walter Barrientos est aujourd'hui un peintre à la reconnaissance internationale. Installé à Toulouse depuis 2001, il se caractérise par une peinture figurative et narrative colorée traduisant un incessant aller-retour entre passé et avenir. Il développe un univers à la fois onirique et chaotique, peuplé de figures humaines et animales où son histoire personnelle croise irrémédiablement celle du monde andin.
Il se définit avant tout par une réappropriation des mythes collectifs qu'il exprime à travers le médium peinture qu'il pratique en tant qu'autodidacte. Il s'est initié à cette pratique comme il a appris à vivre : en toute liberté.
"Comme graveur, j’avais cru être mort", l’avenir d’une technique estimée trop ancienne semblait bouché. "J’ai peint un moment parce que des gravures poussaient en moi. Il fallait que je les laisse dormir. Et je les réveille aujourd’hui comme après un long sommeil. Le retour à la gravure est le fruit d’une longue attente. Dans l’obscurité de ce silence, sourdaient en moi les allers- retours constants entre mon monde passé et mon actualité. Le voyage entre hier et aujourd’hui fut une expectative dormante. La gravure y sommeillait. J’espérais un pont, une voie, un passage entre deux mondes, celui de mes origines imprégnées de terre et de végétal et celui d’aujourd’hui pétri de culture et de savoirs. Une gestation muette opérait. J’ai comme donné naissance à un chemin de retour. En gravant à nouveau, je reviens à une exploration délaissée il y a maintenant plus de quinze ans au Pérou. Je retrouve les gestes, non de l’artiste mais du travailleur de la terre : j’entame des sillons, je déracine, je désherbe, je forme des buttes et des drains, je trie les bonnes et les mauvaises herbes".
