Viktoriya Yakubouskaya
I was born in Belarus, grew up in Estonia in a very picturesque place and currently live in Belarus.
My main subjects are still lifes and landscapes, and the preferred medium for expressing the emotional mood and observation of nature is pastel. Pastel is a tactile technique, the artist works with the pads of his fingers, leaving a particle of himself on the surface in the literal sense.
Nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration, fascinatingly diverse. I am particularly attracted by the play of light and shadow, the ability to convey a sense of light without a light source, through contrasts and color variety.
I often work from life and in plein air with the sounds of the forest, the babble of the river and the cries of the birds. This is surprisingly reflected in the works, filling them with the emotions of the moment and leaving an indelible impression.
Not having the opportunity to receive a traditional art education, however, I am happy to take every opportunity to learn from great artists around the world thanks to modern technology.

I show the basic steps of creating a pastel landscape of my new 2023 artwork. ‘Last Sunbeams” painting. The first days of autumn, the sunset is burning out. The last rays of sunshine before darkness swallows everything. I wanted to convey the stark contrast between the dark ground with sparse lights and the still bright patches of sky. The work is in dry pastel on black paper.
