The theme of the Christ’s Passions is a fundament of theology and art not only for the Christian but also worldwide culture. Many masters with various beliefs in their art pieces were drawn to the image of anguished and suffering Christ. This narrative can be seen in versatile art styles - from the catacomb painting to surrealism and modern postmodern genres.
The Passion storylines in the artistic expressive culture are, primarily, the scenario of the Passion Week. That historical and theological landmark is the last week of Christ’s life on Earth. The scenes and events that are in the New Testimony named Passionate start out after the Last Supper. This theme is very difficult and wide in it’s meaning.
In the Christian art these events can be presented as a cycle, for the viewers to perceive them altogether, one after another. For that the chosen cycle of events can be done in a single artifice physical space, to visually unify the events together. Also, each scenario can be chosen to be presented by itself, enhance the event’s meaning.
By each of the scenes, there are strong traditions, that run through the centuries. In the artistic expressive process, the traditions are held through generations as to place and present the characters, their features and to convey their emotional state in a specific way.
The Gothic style chosen by the author of this particular 14 part piece was picked with a deep understanding of the history of this style. Gothic style has historically inherited the Christian scenario of the Christ’s specifically physical sufferings, with his placement upon the cross. And the pain of the Mother of Christ as a constant scenario that runs through the events. Therefore that is the reason the author chose this particular style to emphasise his understanding and feel of the events depicted upon the 14 wooden carved, same sized pieces, unified as one artwork. The material he chose to use is Linden Wood, and worked it in polychrome. With the background tones and the carving of the wood the author wanted to convey how he emotionally saw and perceived the events of the Passion Week to the viewers of his artwork.
The Christ is presented against a dark background, which is explained by the parts of the New Testimony where it states, that the dark had come from the sixth hour to the ninth hour.
In this particular frame of the events, the author wanted to convey the scariest feeling a human can experience - a suggestion that God has forgotten the him.
