Soon Lai Wai is a contemporary Malaysian painter. He began his career as a graphic designer, while having a background in art from Saito Academy, where he acquired the fundamentals and techniques of painting. He started fusing Western oil paints with the traditional watercolor brushstrokes associated with Oriental paintings after studying Chinese painting. Being a lover of the natural world, he draws inspiration for many of his paintings from the vivid hues he observes in the lush Malaysian terrain and its tropical flora and wildlife. He ultimately decided to make the lovely lotus flower his primary signature and has gained recognition as a semi-abstract expressionist painter.
Soon Lai Wai was born in 1970, in Malaysia. He has shown his work in several Asian countries, including China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Korea.
