Son Lam is a contemporary Vietnamese painter whose artistic journey has evolved from classicist oil painting to a more expressive and liberated approach to abstraction. Born in 1964 in Vietnam, Son Lam graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts.
In the early stages of his career, Son Lam focused on classicist oil painting, using this traditional medium to refine his technique and develop his artistic voice. He sought to evoke a sense of nostalgia and remembrance, capturing elements of the past that remain alive in the present.
However, as his artistic sensibilities evolved, Son Lam began to yearn for a more dynamic and independent form of expression. He desired to explore themes of destruction and rebirth, poetry, and nostalgia in a manner that was both fun and liberating. Embracing abstraction as a means of creative expression, Son Lam found freedom in the fluidity and ambiguity of form and color.
Through his abstract paintings, Son Lam seeks to convey the inherent beauty found in moments of destruction and transformation. His works invite viewers to explore the complexities of existence and to contemplate the ever-changing nature of life.
