When given the chance to carve a rare piece of Greek Pendele marble, I felt the responsibility to give this special stone my very best effort. This is the same marble used to build the Acropolis, which explains a lot as to why parts are still standing today because this the hardest marble I have ever carved. When given the chance to carve a rare piece of Greek Pendele marble, I felt the responsibility to give this special stone my very best effort. This is the same marble used to build the Acropolis, which explains a lot as to why parts are still standing today because this the hardest marble I have ever carved. The quarry has been closed for decades, so there is very little available at this time.
Taking my cue from the strength and steadfastness of the marble, here is my Beautiful Man II, an image of a truly glorious man. The tattoo on his back refers to my series of Bound Angel sculptures ( three so far). In the first one, her ropes are tight as she struggles against them. Next, she has broken the ropes and beginning to escape. And represented here on his back, her hands and wings are completely free. Masculine/feminine, yin/yang energies working together so we can all be the free spirits we're meant to be.
I also think the male nude in ALL his glory is woefully underrepresented in art, so I am making my contribution to correcting this lack.

Sherry Tipton is a contemporary American artist. She began as a portrait artist, but then shifted to stone sculpture with the desire to make her drawing fully three dimensional.
Sherry Tipton is a contemporary American artist. She began as a portrait artist, but then shifted to stone sculpture with the desire to make her drawing fully three dimensional.
Tipton began carving stone in 2004 at Ghost Ranch and a couple of years later began exhibiting her stone sculpture in shows and galleries in Colorado, New Mexico, and New York City, and also began traveling to international stone carving symposia, working in Turkey and Greece.
Sherry Tipton was born in 1960, in Lubbock, Texas. She lives and works in New Orleans where she has established a studio and begun doing restoration work on important monuments in the historic cemeteries.
