Rodica Alecsandra Miller Petrescu
Biography
I was born and raised in Bucharest, Romania where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts ‘ Nicolae Grigorescu’. In 1996, I moved to the United States where I earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in Textile/ Surface Design from Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, New York, NY in 2002. In spite of all difficulties and complications, I managed to have my own gallery, and started to promote my art through the Internet since the year of 2003.
Painting is part of myself, a spectacular ordeal with so little satisfactions, but even though: Nothing is more wonderful than the time spent in the studio, when you isolate yourself from the daily turmoil, and, with an eagerness comparable to that before a competition, you start working. It is a unique moment, when fatigue and loneliness- which crushed you like a fatality, devouring you without haste- disappear...At last, the painting is ready and speaks...Around you, there is silence. Everything has its own meaning, and tired by the achieved flight, you feel like the chronicler of the time, who recorded the results of these experiences to leave them to those who will follow the same Path...
My painting has been strongly influenced by the metaphysical surrealist painters De Chirico “ the poet of emptiness” and Rene Magritte through his philosophical investigation and impossible settings. As for my painting technique, I feel comfortable with oil on canvas and the black backgrounds represent always the Time and Outer Space for my soliloquies.
Welcome to my world!
“ Like the merging flow of joined dreams, the neo- surrealistic realms explored in the visual meditations of Rodica Alecsandra Petrescu angle into subterranean corners of the psyche. Frozen in states of becoming, they seem to taunt the meaning of actualization.”

I paint because I have an adventurous spirit and prefer whimsy and liberty over realism. Painting is my true identity, my only passion that makes me feel free and accomplished.
The encounter with Metaphysical Painting filled my heart with joy because it was exactly what I was looking for in a painting: an introspective analysis of our melancholy dissipated into a labyrinth of thoughts and emotions. A painting can be more than a veridical depiction of a portrait or a landscape. A painting can free your soul.
The dream-like mood of my compositions gets brightened by exuberant colors and undulate lines, shells, rocks, asymmetric pearls sharing wide-open spaces with one or more figurative elements. As I advance patiently, the work reveals itself and surprises me with new interpretations, constantly soliciting my interest and imagination.
My ultimate goal is to create a visual poetry that is one-of-a-kind.

J’ai commencée ma carrière comme un peintre surréaliste toujours regardant Dali “like one of the most unusual artists of all times”.
At the beginning of my career, my style was mostly Abstract Surrealist because my choice of subject was abstract. I was dealing with abstract concepts such as The Grail, The Temptation to be Alive and so on, but even though there was and still there is a dream-like ‘mood’ in my paintings. This metaphysical mood is a very evocative art, reminiscent of the early Giorgio de Chirico, or Edward Hopper, here in the U.S.
Delvaux work illustrates the superficiality of placing a label on an artist's work. He, in fact, did not buy into Surrealism. Not at the philosophical level, the intellectual level, and only marginally at the artistic level. He referred to himself as a classicist, and said that his art was like poetry. His paintings are more like theatrical stages, in which the people are actors, not real people. So here is my Metaphysical connecting point. The objective of Delvaux art is to create a feeling (the feeling of a dream), as opposed to being narrative or based on psychological relationships (although there has been a ton of writing attempting to analyze his paintings).

Today, October 28, 2004, I discovered that four of my paintings have been slashed with a knife by my ex-husband. Among them, there was 'A la Recherche du Temps Perdu'
presented here at Sorry for the bad news, but I was too shocked, and I had to let it out. Although the restoration of my art works is necessary, the paintings are still very valuable. J'aime........

The unrivaled arts festival honoring Milton’s birthday and Paradise Lost, the greatest poem in the English language. Bridging classic literature and contemporary fine art, performing arts and poetry reading.
Clive Milton, a descendant of John Milton through Milton’s brother Christopher, will preside at opening ceremonies September 27th, cutting Milton's Birthday cake, which Clive will provide. And we will unveil Rich Buckler’s new “portrait of John Milton for the 21st century.” Rich is an acclaimed American artist/illustrator. On Sunday September 28th at 2 PM, Steve David will conduct a poet’s tour of the show. Steve is a unique poet who writes & recites poems about the art he sees in galleries throughout the city.
ABOUT THE SHOW: Couched amid historical artifacts and contemporary art celebrating John Milton’s 400th birthday as well as PARADISE LOST, the greatest poem in the English language. Perhaps the largest birthday party for Milton in the world, with poets, artists and composers. We will be documenting this extravaganza on video to produce a documentary for this historical event that we believe will be seen for centuries to come.

Artist Statement
The concept for my work is to capture an emotional thought using pure beauty. It is not about good proportions of the Ancient Greek sculptures, it is not the playful, sensuous beauty of Rococo, it is not the sublime experience of Romanticism, it is the beauty of human emotions. The goal is to depict a state of mind that I have while painting, making a work that appeals to both vision and intellect. To me, the narrative comes after and is of a lesser importance than the lyrical content. I like to discover my composition, but keep its development under control by editing the abstract or figurative elements that can complicate or create discrepancy. Altogether, my work employs conscious and subconscious thinking in the search for that state of completion.
Starting from an inspiring line or color, I let my imagination produce something original. Once the composition gets clarity, I work on the details and accents that will amplify the atmosphere and offer more interpretations. In my concept, beauty has also a mysterious quality, imperfections and even disorder.
Instead of being more practical, in a dreamlike atmosphere, I employ emotional skills to produce unique artworks out of the deep sense of spiritual need. The ultimate goal is to create an illusory place where one can retreat and escape the daily turmoil.
