Article
The recent works of Samindranath Majumdar, enact the process of reconstruction of experience by relocating, thereby deciphering, its elements. Memory, thus, becomes an actual presence, its layers almost palpable, tempting the viewers with the possibility of an exfoliative inward journey. The meditative sensibility at work often acquires an almost brooding quality, questioning the whole point of selfhood and the situatedness of the self. Majumdar, in a sense, translates music; the lyricality of his works relieves the impact of the weight of accumulated experience. The somberness is animated and lightened by the undertones of silent music in his work. The twin points of origination and culmination often merge in his work; Majumdar’s take-off point, as it were, is almost invariably nature, but it is to a kind of reconstructed nature that he returns to, the elements relocated in a psychological space and redefined in the process.
