In "Grass-cat," Sakura Yamaguchi presents a subtle, introspective composition where the cat merges seamlessly with its surroundings, taking on an almost organic quality. The vibrant green, evocative of nature, imbues the feline figure with a quiet yet intriguing presence, suggesting an innate connection to the surrounding space. The texture of the paper and visible traces of paint enhance the tactile quality of the piece, imbuing it with a certain rawness that grounds the composition in physicality. Through monotype, with its soft shading and textured form, Yamaguchi achieves depth not through intricate detail but through expressive simplicity. The cat’s gaze, contemplative and tinged with a gentle melancholy, seems to draw the viewer inward, as if perceiving something elusive that transcends the boundaries of the image. The composition invites a moment of stillness, encouraging reflections on presence, silence, and the ephemeral

Born in 1967, Sakura Yamaguchi is a self-taught graphic designer and a key figure in the Catopia collective. Deeply influenced by his practice of Iaidō, a Japanese martial art rooted in precision and discipline, Yamaguchi approaches his art with a meditative rigor that centers around the figure of the cat as a symbol of grace, mystery and the endless pursuit of perfection. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's observation that “even the worst cat is a masterpiece,” Yamaguchi's monotype prints combine elements of surrealism and expressionism to capture the elusive elegance of cats. Working on handmade or linen paper, his works - such as Blood of Silence - invite viewers into a contemplative space where each print embodies the tension between flaw and beauty, permanence and impermanence. Through the uniqueness of the monotype technique, Yamaguchi's art becomes a meditation on the transient nature of life and the quiet beauty found in imperfection.
