Born in 1967, Sakura Yamaguchi is a self-taught graphic designer and a key figure in the Catopia collective. Deeply influenced by his practice of Iaidō, a Japanese martial art rooted in precision and discipline, Yamaguchi approaches his art with a meditative rigor that centers around the figure of the cat as a symbol of grace, mystery and the endless pursuit of perfection. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's observation that “even the worst cat is a masterpiece,” Yamaguchi's monotype prints combine elements of surrealism and expressionism to capture the elusive elegance of cats. Working on handmade or linen paper, his works - such as Blood of Silence - invite viewers into a contemplative space where each print embodies the tension between flaw and beauty, permanence and impermanence. Through the uniqueness of the monotype technique, Yamaguchi's art becomes a meditation on the transient nature of life and the quiet beauty found in imperfection.
