I used these techniques, which have been faithfully passed down through the generations, to skillfully create shapes and designs that are not typical of traditional lacquerware.

Ryozo Shibata is a contemporary Japanese ceramic artist who believes that the most powerful forms arise from the creation of natural shapes. His innovative technique emerged from observing the natural curves formed by hammocks and the proportional curves influenced by gravity.
Shibata begins his process by throwing a large disk on a wheel and cutting it into a rectangular shape. He then places this shape in a cloth with hangers attached, suspending the cloth in a metal frame resembling a hammock. By carefully adjusting the heights around the cloth, he allows the clay to form beautiful, natural curves. Shibata presented this unique technique at the ceramics studio at Harvard University.
The blue color in his pieces is made with Gosu, a cobalt-based blue pigment traditionally used in pottery decoration. Shibata meticulously blends ingredients to create his own version, which he calls Shibata Gosu. In his decorative process, he favors linear expressions, using a needle to drag lines across the clay and filling them with his blue pigment. This method produces sharp, airy lines that Shibata feels convey a modern aesthetic, which he incorporates into his works.
