I once saw a set of reproductions of touristy Hawaiian paintings that were owned by a man who was stationed in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor attack. This painting reminds me of those pictures. It also reminds me of some of Gaugin's work. The bowl represents both a burden and a blessing. Oil on charcoal on gesso on mahogany ply. [...]

My dad always had an art studio in every home we lived in growing up in Virginia, Utah, Maryland, Frankfurt, Munich, and The Hague. He would work on art many evenings after he got home from his job. I believe it was from his influence and example that I always wanted to be an artist since I can remember. Though I wanted to be an artist, I didn't think it was possible. I took some ceramics classes while studying at the University of Utah and wanted to major in that but changed my mind and eventually studied art at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, USA,  specializing in printmaking but have mainly concentrated on painting for many years now. I have been selling my work through galleries, art centers, museums, and private shows as well as online and in doing commissions. The cultures and art museums of Europe as well as the culture of Japan where I lived for two years have been a strong influence on my art.
