Tips for the sculptor in clay

This is my first blog ever and I am not quite sure where to start.

I have a lot of information I would like to share with individuals who are trying out sculpting/modelling in clay.

Step one; figure out what you would like to make. Start by choosing a subject or figure not standing on it's feet, but rather sitting or reclining. If it is an object choose something rather solid that will be able to stand on it's own.

step two; simplify the form, if it is a figure, think in terms of geometric shapes and forms, look at what you are attemting and find the cylinder, the ball etc. For example; the head would be a ball, the neck a cylinder, the body an oval, and then put them together by scoring (scratching lines on opposite sides of the two pieces), add water to the two parts and press them together.

That is how I would start a sculpture, and ALWAYS put more clay than you need, it is easier to take away than work with thin pieces, because they will dry to quickly and you will not be able to make details.

step three; always spray your piece and cover it well with a plastic bag, this will allow you to work on it for several days without it drying.
