"Follow your heart's desire."

Drapala Gallery, a visionary painter and photographer, is committed to giving a powerful voice through women's art and writing. Based on a deep belief in the power of art to express the strength of humanity, she has founded collaborative projects that transcend creative boundaries. One of her flagship projects is the publication of art anthologies, dedicated to women artists from around the world.

In 2018, Drapala Gallery published Strong Women's Art Anthology , a collective work celebrating women in art. The project brought together international artists and writers to share their stories, creations, and resilience. Building on the success of the first edition, Drapala launched a new call for submissions for its second volume, 2020, Women Artists' Create! , designed to reflect the strength of humanity through the challenges of the pandemic.

This collaborative project is an exceptional opportunity for female artists—painters, sculptors, photographers, writers—to submit their creations inspired by the year 2020. Drapala is committed to providing a free platform for these talents, and each artist will be able to share their work as well as the story that inspired it. Beyond the art, a portion of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to women’s and children’s shelters, adding a charitable dimension to this artistic initiative.

Drapala Gallery continues to push the boundaries of creativity and amplify women's voices in the art world, while encouraging deep reflection on the collective strength of humanity.

The Farm Workers’ Series I Paintings

When I first started the painting project on the Farm Workers’ Series, it was though the paintings were meant to be. That might seem difficult to understand; however, there are many steps to complete the paintings, from deciding on which subject to paint, to taking photographs of a subject, transferring the image onto canvas, deciding what medium to use, and then painting the picture.

I’ve painted a few paintings in my life, some which have been very easy to paint and have taken me only a day to paint. This is difficult for me to believe, but it is true. On the other hand, there have been more difficult paintings in my painting career that have taken me months to paint, such as my self-portrait, In My Garden, which can be found in this book. My self-portrait took forever, maybe because at that time I was dealing with a few issues in my life. However, I must say, I was very pleased with the results. That reminds me a quote that Michelangelo once said,

“If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all.”

It seemed to me that the Farm Workers’ painting project flowed. When I started the first farm worker painting of the series, it all began with a lady that caught my eye on my way to work one day in the valley. I knew in my heart, she would be the perfect person to paint. I just needed to convince her of it. She was wearing the colors of red, white, and blue, walking hurriedly on the shoulder of the road, and ready to board a white farm worker’s bus. I immediately found there was a language barrier between us when I began to speak to her, she speaking Spanish and me, who only knew English. But, in a few seconds I explained to her, how I do not know how, that I was going to do a painting of her. When she heard those words, she stopped and posed proudly. And that is how my Farm Worker’s Series painting project began.

When I was finished painting her portraiture, I was very pleased. I immediately named the painting Eve, not only because she was first woman in my series of my paintings, but also because I remember reading in the Old Testament of the Bible, the chapter on Genesis, that after Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden after their downfall, God told Eve that she would bear children and that Adam would have to work hard all his life to produce enough food from the earth to live. So, my second painting would indeed be named Adam. When finally completing series, seven paintings, I was most pleased because I had accomplished a project that I had set out to do. Even though it took me over a year to complete, it was worth the effort.

Since painting that series, the paintings have not only been recognized in Yuma at the Yuma County Fair, but also in London, England, where they received the Honorable Award of Diploma of Excellence. I was also asked to attend an exhibition in Florence, Italy in 2007 because of those paintings.
