“Miniature”, 2024
Oil on wood, edition 1/1
16 × 20 × 3 cm (framed: 22 × 27 × 6 cm)
Unique piece – signed by the artist
A radiant composition that seems to bloom from the surface itself, “Miniature” (2024) by Pascal Courcelles is a vivid testimony to the expressive power of pure color and matter. Despite its small size, this painting commands attention with a dynamic surface that invites close observation and slow contemplation.
Composed of thick, sculptural layers of oil paint on wood, the work evokes the tactile energy of Courcelles’ creative process. Each color — from brilliant orange to soft lavender, deep crimson to luminous yellow — is applied with a sense of immediacy and intention. The palette shifts between contrasts and harmonies, creating a visual rhythm that is both spontaneous and composed.
This is a one-of-a-kind creation, not part of a series or edition. It belongs to a recent body of work where Courcelles explores the condensed intensity of the “Miniature” format, intimate works that reflect the emotional and physical gesture of painting in its rawest form. No digital reproduction or print can replicate the relief, texture, and movement present in the original.
The strength of this work lies in its authenticity. Each brushstroke is a gesture frozen in time, each layer a trace of the artist’s hand. Courcelles is a painter with decades of international exhibition experience, known for his material approach and poetic use of color. This piece exemplifies his ability to balance spontaneity with control, creating a surface that feels both alive and resolved.
The painting is in perfect condition, professionally framed in a white shadow box that enhances its sculptural presence and protects the edges of the work. It is signed and ready to display. Whether viewed from a distance or up close, it reveals new visual and textural details with every glance.
Ideal for those who appreciate bold materiality, intuitive color, and the presence of the artist’s gesture. This work integrates seamlessly into a contemporary collection, bringing a spark of movement and depth to any space. It’s a contemplative piece, small in size, vast in impact.

Born in Brussels in 1956, Courcelles studied art at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels and in
Tournai, between 1972 and 1979. Since then, he has built a vibrant artistic path, with solo and
group exhibitions across Belgium, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, and beyond. But it is his visual language
that leaves the deepest impression: profoundly sensorial, composed of layers, material, and color,
not as an end, but as a process.
His painting is part of a material lineage, where comparisons have been made with Michel Frère
or even Eugène Leroy. But unlike Leroy, whose brushstroke carried a nearly tragic pathos,
Courcelles paints from a vital impulse, in celebration of life. With each gesture bursts forth the joy
of color, the pleasure of chromatic vibration. His admiration for Riopelle is clear: both artists
explore the interweaving and layering of color, often in their pure state, explosive, like emotional
fireworks.
The work of Pascal Courcelles does not ask to be understood — it asks to be felt. It is vibration,
intuition, pleasure. And above all, it is a celebration of what is most simple and most essential: the
joy of painting.
