Thrafia is a Greek artist working in Berlin and Athens. His art is dedicated to the symbolic engagement with figures, forms and alchemical landscapes, inspired by nature and the colors of the Greek sky. His compositions are created mainly by color pigments on paper and work with wax on canvas. As a representative of conceptual painting, he brings emblematic yet romantic, playful landscapes to the screen, playing with abstraction as well as with the metaphysical. Thrafia's artistic work is increasingly devoted to the contemplation of the form and alchemical transformation of these forms.
Thrafia (Panajiotis Daniilopoulos) was born in 1955 in Athens. He studies fine arts in London at the Goldsmiths School of Arts and from 1985 resides in Berlin from where he works and exhibits in central Europe and Greece. As a representative of conceptual painting, he was also part of the neo-expressionist movement of the 80s with systematic, exhibiting activity and many works in collections and museums. He taught art at universities in London and Berlin and created the exhibition project "empty rooms" in Berlin 1995 and "365 artproject" in Athens 2000.
Thrafia has exhibited his works in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Athens, London, Berlin and Munich. The most significant are: 1985 METAMORPHOSE, Acme Studios, London, 1993 HORIZON, Museum of Installation, London, 1991 ART EUROPE, ALCHEMICAL LANDSCAPES, State Art Gallery, Berlin, 1997 A. MALRAUX: MUSEE IMAGINAIRE BOX PROJECT, Museum of Installation, London. Thrafia's art is present at international art fairs, most recently at Art Athens 2017, and his works are in private collections worldwide.
Thrafia is at the height of his artistic career, spending time in his new studio in Athens and planning to get involved in the art scene in bustling Kypseli and to establish more. Together with his gallery owner Petros Doumas (Technohoros, Athens) a book about his work has been published about collected works and his show "Calligraphies" is shown in Gallery Ersi, Athens until November.
