Olivier Steinert

Born in 1953 in Belgium, Olivier Steinert grew up in the Congo where the beauty and the multitude of wildlife led him to observe the shapes and colors which later became the essence of his work.

Olivier has held pen and brush ever since childhood. But it was between 1973 and 1980, during his engineering studies in Belgium and in the Netherlands that his painting took on a more definite character. Geometry and mathematics gave him the ability to ‘distil’ the essence of his fascination for the living world. By dividing his subject into a multitude of separate cells and using gouache as a medium to fill each of those cells with its own color, he obtained a better control over color-gradients.

Through this technique the resulting work lent itself to reproduction via silk-screen. After an approach by Olivier, Schleiper & Fils, a renowned art suppliers and gallery in Brussels, issued a number of the artist's creations as signed limited editions. From then on a distinctive style soon took shape: the subject had to become a ‘living being’: its volume and colors were therefore emphasized and set against against a background of the deepest black. Later fluorescent gouaches and metallic paints were used and months of experiment with the painter's pallet produced the desired color gradients.

After several years during which his work was sold in several countries, the technical constraints of the printing technique limited the evolution and development of the creative work. The artist then put aside his creative activity and devoted himself entirely to his career as an engineer until 2014.

Now settled in the South of France between Nice and Grasse and at the end of a career as a software engineer, Olivier has reconnected with his painting, now using pixels instead of gouache and the power of the computer allows him to continue the unfinished work. This work is now more precise, more contrasted and new fine-art printing techniques like Digigraphie®/Giclée allow for limited editions to meet the highest quality at an affordable price.
