Catherine joue un rôle central pendant les guerres de Religion qui divisent la France au XVIe siècle. Pragmatique et habile stratège, elle tente de maintenir l’équilibre entre catholiques et protestants, mais reste une figure controversée, notamment pour son implication présumée dans le massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy (1572).
Passionnée d’art, d’astrologie et d’architecture, elle est aussi une grande mécène de la Renaissance française, et fait construire des monuments comme le château des Tuileries. Catherine de Médicis incarne une figure de pouvoir féminin complexe, à la fois maternelle, redoutée et profondément politique.
Dans ce tableau, Catherine de Médicis surgit dans une interprétation résolument contemporaine et sobre, tout en conservant une aura teintée de noirceur et de mystère.
Le personnage est représenté debout, dans une attitude frontale et hiératique, une main tenant un mouchoir rouge, l'autre détendue, presque flottante. Le regard est froid, dirigé légèrement hors champ, évoquant à la fois le contrôle et la distance. Elle n’est pas dans l’émotion : elle est dans la décision, dans le calcul. La robe noire, sobre et lisse, évoque la rigueur politique et le deuil. Catherine fut veuve très jeune, et porta le deuil toute sa vie. La ceinture faite d’anneaux métalliques ajoute une touche martiale, suggérant une chaînes, symbole de la contrainte du pouvoir.
Le mouchoir rouge qu’elle tient est inspiré du geste du président de corrida qui décide en lâchant un mouchoir rouge de la mise a mort du taureau, ce détail fait de Catherine une arbitre de vie et de mort. Elle est celle qui tranche, qui juge.
Dans le contexte historique de la Saint-Barthélemy, cette lecture prend tout son sens : Catherine apparaît souvent dans l’histoire comme celle qui manipule dans l’ombre, mais sans se salir les mains. Ici, elle fait le geste discret, presque élégant, d’une une mise à mort feutrée.
