"The whole universe is based on rhythms. Everything happens in circles, in spirals".
John Hartford.
The circle is a dominant universal symbol with extensive meaning. It represents the notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the infinite, eternity, timelessness, all cyclic movement. It symbolizes the cycle of time, the perpetual motion of everything that moves, the planets' journey around the sun (the circle of the zodiac), the great rhythm of the universe. It has a magical value as a protective agent and indicates the end of the process of individuation, of striving towards a psychic wholeness and self-realization.
("I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world". Rainer Maria Rilke).

"The feasts of Virgin Mary's holy life have been distributed in the calendar cycle of time in a way that they symbolically correspond and mark stations in the annual cycle of the productive process, the cycle of vegetation, and specifically that of wheat cultivation.
The culminating feast of the Fifteenth of August commemorating the Assumption of the Virgin coincides with this end of the periodic productive cycle of Mother Earth at the point of contact with the next, new cycle, between summer and autumn. Therefore the festival at the crossroads of the two eras, has all the characteristics of a funeral and at the same time rebirth celebration, with rituals where the folk, pre-Christian tradition meets and harmoniously coexists with the official Christian one". (From the article "Cycle of Time" -authored by Eleni Psychogiou).

Nicholas Smyrnios (surname indicating a Smyrna origin), was born in Edessa, Greece and grew up in the historic city of Thessaloniki, surrounded by Greek, Roman and Byzantine antiquities. From such a classical environment, he  found himself in a totally different place in his early twenties, when he emigrated to Stockholm and started his studies at the National University College of Art and Design, considered the ultimate incubator of Scandinavian modernism.
These different environments and the cultures they represent left a strong imprint on Smyrnios's artistic profile, who dedicated the first years of his artistic career to finding paths and bridges between them, in order to define his own identity. The body of the work he has produced since then is characterized both by his passion for the vast Greek cultural heritage, as well as by his devotion for the latest modernist movements and trends.

Working in relevant professional and academic environments in both Sweden and Greece, he gained valuable experience and exceptional skills which have been reflected in his long-lasting creative activity.

Engaged as a graphic designer as well as a teacher in applied arts education for more than 30 years, Smyrnios managed to establish his artistic identity as a “child of his time”, interacting continuously with the modern spirit and new media, adapting and discarding the elements of the Zeitgeist.
