Nataliya Bagatskaya
Nataliya Bagatskaya is a contemporary Ukrainian painter. She has always been fascinated by the color and form. By combining them together, she gets unlimited possibilities for creating art. Some of her paintings are impulsive, where inner emotion captures her brush, while others are trips that even surprises the artist.
With her paintings, Bagatskaya tries to express how she sees the world, and on an emotional level to communicate with the viewer, hoping to fix the moment on the canvas. Her style has the basis of realism, adding surrealism or elements of the style of cubism, or even creating a mystical environment around realistic objects. In her works there is a series of still lives - as a "replica" on the subject of Dutch and English classical still-life with the accompanying attributes: vases, glasses, fruits and flowers that appear on a deep dark background. All these objects and environments acquire their aura, glow, giving the viewer a kind of mystical realism.
Nataliya Bagatskaya was born in 1967, in Ukraine. She is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.

Hellish Lottery is a series of psychologically charged artworks that explore the absurdity and cruelty of chance in times of war and chaos. Behind the calmness of daily rituals lies a brutal unpredictability — who lives, who vanishes, and who is left to watch. There is no justice here, no logic. Only a silent draw made by the inferno itself.
Each painting freezes a moment of tension — domestic interiors pierced by violence outside, silent observers paralyzed by invisible forces, and symbols of fate (like the cat, the empty plate, or the burning horizon) that remind us: survival is not a reward, but a random number.
This series speaks to those who have faced loss, to those who still listen for sirens in their sleep, and to those who understand that true horror often wears a quiet face.
The "Hellish Lottery" is not just a concept — it is our shared trauma, wrapped in beauty, silence, and smoke.

The project "Life in Avatar" encapsulates my mission, which centers on embracing positivity in any situation. This may manifest as a thought, a dream, or a memory. Even when circumstances seem dire, my resolute spirit keeps me grounded, allowing me not to flee from challenges but rather to find the strength to persist in doing what I can. The visage of Mona Lisa is an essential component in every composition.
No other countenance would suffice, for several reasons:
Firstly, it embodies the archetype of the feminine face.
Secondly, it belongs to everyone, that is, to each individual.
Thirdly, it hails from an entirely different epoch, essential for oscillation, as greater oscillation yields a heightened effect.
Fourthly, it serves as my avatar, as the series explores the narratives of my life, and within this context, contemporary faces of other women seem entirely out of place.
For me, stability remains elusive. Everything is in a constant state of flux. There is nothing permanent. Circumstances change, moods shift, and I find myself in an unending process of self-evolution and my relationship with the world - this is the new norm.
In the series "Life in Avatar," I leverage the juxtaposition of emotional and aesthetic qualities from two distinct epochs, going beyond the norm and offering a wellspring of constructive experience for the collective.
Each painting in the series is a story, akin to episodes in a television series where I am both the viewer and the creator, the cinematographer, and the protagonist.
Now I understand that the state I find myself in today holds great significance for my future destiny. Therefore, I summon the inner strength to resist succumbing to negativity and to prevent pain from taking the upper hand...
I hope this captures the essence of your artistic statement in a manner befitting an art critic. If you have any further questions or specific points you'd like me to focus on, please feel free to let me know.
