Profile
Why practice gyotaku today?
To record the size of your catch: fishermen may stretch the truth but fish prints never lie.
To bring art and science together: some species have never been documented alive; there is no record showing their natural
color and form.
Why do color gyotaku?
Plants and animals are naturally colorful. Color breathes life into images of fish and other nature subjects, producing beautiful
art that is fun and exciting to make!
Policy on printing rare animals
I will never kill any rare animal for the purpose of printing. I will only print a rare animal to preserve its lively shape forever and
provide a useful tool for scientific study.
Why use cloth instead of paper for printing?
Printing paper is limited in both length and width. Cloth such as silk or polyester is available in very long lengths: for instance, I
have printed a 7 ft killer whale, a 7 ft sailfish and even a 20 ft giant squid. Cloth is strong, it does not break when detached
from the subject. Finally, prints on cloth can be washed as oil-based colour inks are used.
Who makes oil-based gyotaku colour inks?
I make my own ink and sell it as “Dragon Ink 10 Colour Set”
