My name is Meike van Riel and I have been painting in Utrecht for sixteen years. I paint on large canvases up to two meters wide or high, with oil paint or acrylic paint. Although I also like to paint in a smaller format.
When I started painting I used acrylic paint. I had concentrated on using only this medium to develop my own style. After many years of working with acrylic paint, I chose to work with oil paint. Discovering other materials and combinations of materials gave me more possibilities. I have mastered working with India ink, colored ink, charcoal, ink pens and ecoline. I also immersed myself in making images with black wax.
Although I was admitted to the art academy a few years ago, I chose to continue independently at the time. I wanted to prioritize my personal development process, continue to develop my own style and I wanted to keep exhibiting. As an artist I need feedback and the conversation about art. About what you want to say with your work or not. That is why I have taken lessons for several years with teachers of my own choosing. By talking to experienced artists, I came to insights about painting. My inspiration is mainly in people. The use of 'white' amid the colors is a metaphor. White represents something everyone owns; being human. I call it the 'essence'. In the year 2022, another fascination is emerging. At the end of the summer of 2022 I became aware of this. The subjects are "solism" and 'simplicity'.
I like to paint with music, such as jazz or classical. Musicians such as Maceo Parker and Miles Davis sound through space.
I like to make ink pen drawings of flowers, the Dom tower or other buildings on the spot. The pen drawings have been produced as reproductions since 2019. And these are sold in more and more shops and cities.
For the past five years I have regularly exhibited in Utrecht, other cities and abroad. My work is now hanging in countries such as; America, England and Canada. Works of art appeared in the New York catalog 'international contemporary artists, Voll 8'. This catalog is sold at, among others, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in the U.S.A.
