About Mary Papas

Mary was born in Egypt by parents of Greek descent.  

At age 10 the family moved to Libya in North Africa and after a year settle in Greece for 6 years where she attended Greek schools.  

At age 14 Mary took her first art course through the long distance learning ABC Art School.

At age 17 the family moved again for the last time to South Africa where she still resides permanently.  

From a very young age Mary was sketching people, animals and the scenery around her, Sketching was her favorite pass time and Art was her best subject in school, always achieving the best marks!

Later, when Mary could dedicate more time to art, she attended advance painting classes for four years developing and learning different styles and techniques from leading professional art teachers and another three years for abstract studies learning to think and express these thoughts and ideas in an abstract way.

Mary has received two awards for her abstract paintings, by taking part in International competitions with the U.K based gallery – Art Now in 2007 and the French based on line gallery – Art Majeur in 2014.

Mary has taken part in many exhibitions locally with other artists and with the art clubs that she is a member of.

In 2008 exhibited overseas at the Royal Dublin Society Art fair which proved to be a wonderful experience and very rewarding!

Mary is selling her artwork through her website and other art galleries on line local and foreign.

Artist Statement

When painting I always have a concept in mind taken from the world around me or from my very deep-set traditions of my Greek culture and history past and present. Also living in four different countries of diverse religions and cultures, through my growing-up years, has prepared me for a spiritual journey, which I can express in my paintings.
 My preferred method of painting is with a palette knife. I like the clarity of the undiluted buttery texture of the paint and the sharp contrast of the different hues. I sculpture my shapes on my two dimensional surfaces.

I enjoy a variety of painting styles.   I cannot conform to one type or subject

I have a series of work on the go called “City Life” predominantly of abstract paintings and Anonymous Figures and Faces, a series I am currently creating and also my Country series together with my floral paintings.

I just love painting!
