Kristina York
Kristina is a gifted artist born in paradisiacal Costa Rica. She has been practicing art for a lifetime: "as a child, from the moment she was able to hold a pen she knew she was born to paint". In Costa Rica she attended the Taller de Artes de Jorge Sanchez and also was a member of the Rafael Pacheco Estudio de Arte, where she explore different medias and began to find her distinctive expression. She also took fine art classes at the University of Costa Rica (UCR) while pursuing her career as an attorney at the UCR Law school: "My father wanted me to become a lawyer, however, my true passion has always been the Arts. I would sneak out every time I could to hang out at the Fine Arts Faculty just to breathe their air! It felt as if I was pursuing a forbidden love that I just could not give up..."
Her art is a bridge by which she finds herself able to liberate her soul and spirit from the vast emotion transmitted to her by life itself. Her work is always a spontaneous response to her inner voice of creativity in which she finds herself striving to capture the essence of her subjects with untold devotion. She approaches each piece with a deep sense of reverence and curiosity. Each original and unique piece is perhaps a dream that would never be revealed exactly the same way again.
Her portraits capture the very soul of her subjects enhancing their own distinctive beauty.
Personal crisis as a result of the lost of her oldest child in 2004 represented a turning point in her life. After dark years of profound grief and inability to paint, Kristina's inspiration has been reborn and restored and continues to evolve itself into a fruitful odyssey of colors, messages and themes full of emotion and splendor. In her own words: "... My aspiration is to touch the spirit and the soul in all things around me… celebrating both the immense and the small miracles of life .... my goal is to capture that in my paintings. Hopefully, in the process they will in time touch the soul and the spirit of those that experience them." Kristina York

Artist statement:
My present work is the result of the life experiences I have had within the past few years. Within my current body of work you may be able to perceive the search that has taken place from within my soul. A search that has evolved into a search for my very spirit and the very meaning of life.
I had experienced the most profound loses an individual could experience in the past recent years. I have walked paths of sorrow and have grieved allowing my heart to be filled with darkness. I have walked and searched until my emotional and physical strength departed me. My present work is the work that comes from a broken heart. As I continue to stretch my arms to the heavens… I am finding glimpses of hope and light. It is also here where you might sense movement within my paintings that evolves slowly.
I like to call my present body of work “Metamorphosis” as it depicts the metamorphosis of a soul. The evolutive transformation from a small dark cocoon into a feast of color, faith, hope and celebration of everlasting life.
