This is one of the rare occasions that the title came before the image. The abstract language has to be the most challenging language to study, it is easy to produce, but very difficult to give a meaning to. Yet it is a language we all use without awareness. We all get dressed in the morning, yet how we dress could depend on our mood, it could depend on how we want others to view us, in an interview, impress a possible partner or if you are unlucky, in front of the judge. Abstraction is understanding your choices. The first thing is, knowing what impression you want to give, this is the easy part. Understanding abstract, you have to delve deeper and ask yourself, why does this coat go with this dress, why does this tie go with this shirt. Understanding your image is what and why some things work visually and some things do not. Understanding how we communicate without words is equally as important as using words. First impressions count. The abstract language is not taught in schools, probably because it is taken for granted unless you are an artist.

I am a full-time artist, trained at Falmouth School of art. My work is basically all about the study of the Language of art. I believe that all artists use the same language no matter what their style is, it could be expressionism or it could be life drawing or hard-edge abstraction, the language used is the same, the only difference is the composition. My work is a bit like studying a dictionary before writing a book.

Always in the back of my mind is the freedom that I had when I was a child who picked up a crayon, for the first time and started to make marks on a piece of paper. It could be said that I have been trying all my life to get back to that point, but with the knowledge that I have gained over the years.

After leaving Art School and hitting the real world I soon discovered that it was not possible to make a living from my art, I did not want to be one of those poor struggling artists who believed that the world owed them a living. It was at this time that I decide to work at any job and save money in the hope that I could become self-sufficient. It was at this time that I moved to London where work was easy to come by and at the same time to be close to all the galleries that London had to offer. I had many different jobs from warehouse work, and labouring on building sites to being a crew member on a charter yacht.

Well to cut a long story short, it took me 30 years to be in a position where I could finally say that I had sufficient funds to follow my dreams, I sold my house and anything of value and moved back to Cornwall, to the town of Falmouth where I  started my art education and 15 years on I am happy to say that I am living the life of an artist.
