Calder with Rothko Influence #3
Llewellyn Berry, Artist

Background information
In 2010, Llewellyn Berry began a three year photographic study and interpretation of the Alexander Calder sculpture, Two Disks, which sits in front of the Hirshhorn Museum located on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
Initially, he made the study in black and white, however, as he studied the photographs, he discovered a few images that resembled pyramids. This "pyramidic" interpretation led him to add a touch of golden color to one series of the images created. With the subsequent sections or blocks of gold and black tones in some of the images, to Berry, they had the visual feeling or sense of Mark Rothko's work. Thus, the "Rothko influence".
The entire "Calder Portfolio Series" is comprised of a black and white portfolio, a Golden portfolio and a Layered, Digital Images Cubist-Abstract Expressionist Portfolio.

Llewellyn Berry is a photographer who has specialized in two genres: landscape photography and semi-abstract expressionism. He works in black and white, with little interest in colorwork. Additionally, his work bears the influence of Georges Braques, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Willem de Kooning, and Paul Klee.

When photography illuminates the world around us, it reaches significant artistic heights. The artist's singular perspective sheds light on that fundamental aspect of our being - our collective and universal being. That image can serve as a constant reminder of the universe's uniqueness and the all-pervading beauty that exists around us.

Llewellyn Berry was born in the United States. He is employed in Middle River, Maryland. His work is included in numerous international collections.
