Interestingly, crochet has become a useful tool in mathematics and science, so my work often contains organically inspired forms because crochet objects can be closely governed by the same mathematical principles and systems commonly found in nature. As a prolific crocheter, I have often noticed how the technique seems to mimic various biological processes such as cell growth and reproduction. The Insets series of photographs is directly conceived from the Stains series where doilies have become substitutes for cells and are 'stained' like organisms being prepared for a microscope slide. As such, these photos become reminiscent of the way those stained specimens often have close-up images of specific structures taken, allowing for examination and appreciation of subtle details.
