Born in 1980 in Kampala (Uganda) Jude Kasagga discovered at the early age of ten that he loved drawing and handicrafts. At the age of 15, Jude illustrated his first book "guluma ya guzza", which was an immediate success and brought him further opportunities to work on children's book illustrations. Since then he has been a productive illustrator as well as graphic artist, sculptor and painter. Encouraged by his parents, he studied art and design at Kyambogo University in Kampala.
Jude draws his inspiration from music and social issues in his environment, while he lets his imagination guide him in creating his paintings. Birds are a recurring element in his paintings.
The artist says about birds that they enable him to transfer his experiences and perceptions of human emotions and to represent them in an abstract way. Since these animals occur in the most diverse species, shapes and colours, they are a great source of inspiration for him and a current favourite subject.
To describe his style, one can use the word "confetti", a kind of explosion of patches of colour that are supposed to represent action and movement. Jude likes to experiment with different techniques and media and is always looking for a unique touch for his work. When he paints, he has to keep the momentum and "forget everything", as his friends and colleagues describe it. At the same time, the artist calls his work incomplete without the role of the viewer: the eyes as an essential element of his paintings not only serve to represent emotions; they allow him to invite the viewer to get involved and become part of the artwork.
From 2010 onwards, Jude has been involved in various group and solo exhibitions in Kampala. Today he trains young emerging artists and practices art. He works together with Saad Lukwago in the Halifax Studio in Kampala (Uganda).
