Jose martins
French artist painter born August 12, 1951 in Casablanca.
Parents of Hispano-Portuguese origin who arrived in France on the French Riviera in 1965.
José Martins was then 13 years old. Very quickly from the age of 18, his artistic vocation led him to Paris. He sings, he paints, he visually feeds on everything that surrounds him.
Little by little his personal universe takes shape. Romanticism and sensuality become the guides of his human and artistic sensitivity.
He sang in cabarets and exhibited his first paintings in various galleries. But success is not there.
It is galley and bohemian, but his happy and carefree character allows him to overcome difficulties.
During these years, he met artists who influenced him… Jean Marais, Charles Aznavour, Charles Trenet and especially Serge Gainsbourg who was a lyric composer, but also a painter in his early days.
José Martins is influenced by characters such as Jacques Tati, the photos of Doisneau, Charlie Chaplin, the old Paris of black and white films. Little by little he became a left bank style humanist, marked by the atmosphere of St Germain des Prés.
Time passes, he returns to his midday. It was not until sixty years that the lucky star, fate or his muse made him imagine the “Martins Lovers”. A couple of timeless lovers accompanied by their black cat. Lulu, Lili and Lolo were born. They are on a romantic walk through the streets of Paris and the French Riviera. Black and white paintings, only Lili's umbrella and skirt are bright red. The result is very elegant, smooth and fine. In his workshop in the old village of Mougins near Cannes, José Martins receives with simplicity and happiness, an international clientele. For five years his work has finally been a great success.
