John Vermette is an astronomer and astrophotographer with a lifelong interest in astronomy and science. He spent all clear nights imaging the cosmos after erecting an observatory in his backyard. In 2012, he began imaging the night sky with a wide field camera lens in order to obtain a much wider field of view than possible with most telescopes.
His work is distinguished by a wide-angle and a fast lens that enables the Milky Way to be captured alongside the foreground.
John Vermette was born in Rhode Island and moved to Tucson in 1964 with his family. Despite the fact that he has no formal training in photography. His work has been featured in Sky & Telescope and Astronomy magazines, NASA Astronomy Photo of the Day, Arizona Highways Photo of the Day, NASA Astronomy Photo of the Day, The Art of Planetary Science, and Spacefest, and he was recently named the winner of the 2020 Annual Photo Contest sponsored by Arizona Highways.
