L'entrée du port de Marseille est protégée par un ensemble d'îles et îlots, jadis rattachées au continent, à l'époque de l'ère glaciaire, (environ 40.000ans). L'île Maïre culmine à 140m, et marque la pointe Sud, de la cité phocéenne, face aux Goudes, précédant Cassis ses falaise, son Cap Canaille, (363m), ses calanques, jusqu'à la Ciotat et son Bec de l'Aigle. Puis Sanary et sa pointe de la Cride, face à Six Fours-le-Plages.
En arrière-plan la côte est protégée, par des Monts de moyenne montagne, environ 500m, la protégeant des vents: les massifs de l'Etoile et du Garlaban au-dessus de Marseille, puis la Ste. Victoire, chère à Cézanne dominant Aix en Provence, et la Ste. Baume, (toutes deux de plus de 1.000m), enfin les Mont Toulonnais, dont le Gros Cerveau surplombant Sanary et Ollioules.
