Biography
Jaume Plensa is a renowned Spanish contemporary artist and sculptor, born on August 23, 1955, in Barcelona, Spain. Known for his monumental public works, Plensa’s art explores themes of humanity, language, and the connections between the physical and spiritual worlds. His works are characterized by their poetic and meditative qualities, often blending elements of light, sound, and text.
Plensa studied at the Llotja School of Art and Design and the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He began his artistic career in the early 1980s, initially focusing on cast iron and bronze sculptures. Over time, his practice expanded to include innovative materials such as glass, stainless steel, and resin, along with multimedia installations that incorporate light and sound.
Language and text play a significant role in Plensa’s work, as he often integrates excerpts from literature, poetry, and religious texts into his sculptures. His iconic large-scale figurative sculptures, such as "Crown Fountain" (2004) in Chicago's Millennium Park, blend technological innovation with humanistic themes, using LED screens and water to create an interactive experience.
