Israel Adonai Jiménez Medina, born on May 10, 1983, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has been a prominent figure in contemporary art since moving to Galicia 15 years ago to pursue further studies in Fine Arts at the Faculty of Pontevedra. His artistic journey began much earlier, with the completion of a Higher Cycle of Illustration at the School of Art and Higher Design in his hometown.
Focusing on symbolic realism, Israel's work explores profound themes of love and death through the lens of objects. His recent projects delve into the evolution of funeral rites throughout history, highlighting how these rituals have been significantly simplified in modern times. He draws inspiration from the rich traditions of Greek culture, which once featured elaborate funerary customs, including the ceremonial use of crowns, ribbons, and jewels. Central to these rites was the placement of coins (obols) in the eyes and mouth of the deceased to pay Charon, the ferryman, for passage across the Acheron lagoon.
In his latest collection, Israel Jiménez uses mythology to emphasize the intrinsic power and significance of objects beyond their surface value. He posits that even seemingly simple items can hold immense emotional weight, often surpassing monetary worth. Through his art, he aims to prompt reflections on the courage and audacity required to engage with life's transitions, questioning whether one would be permitted to board Charon's vessel for the journey to the afterlife.
Israel's intention is to create a dialogue that connects viewers to the culture of objects, suggesting that each item carries a unique story and personal significance that transcends material value. In doing so, he challenges audiences to consider the deeper meanings behind the objects that populate their lives, ultimately asking, "Would the boatman let us get on?"
