Inke Bemelmans
Belgian contemporary artist, mainly autodidact in painting, digital drawing and graphic design.
Her background in software engineering brought her to digital drawing using Adobe Illustrator. Between 2005 and 2015 she created illustrations with graphic pen. These vector drawings are cheerful, original and poetic, with a cartoonish touch.
Since 2016 Inke paints on canvas, using acrylic. Her paintings give meaning to her way of coping with life: question your position, leave your perspective and allow another perspective. She incorporates elements from street art, graphic design, conceptual art and surrealism.
Her art is art without perspective, or from a different perspective, with bright colors in flat shapes, semi-figurative, with clear lines. You often find a central figure from which every other element starts, which can be a stylized tree, a cartoonish foot or a symbolic arrow. Everything is connected, and once connected, everything behaves the same way. Inke likes to put you on a different track, emphasizing topics like loving trees, gender identity, cultural markers, social identity and self reflection.
At the same time she maintains a collection of paintings in a completely different, impressionistic style with nocturnal views of the city. In this collection "because the night", she allows the melancholy.
On her website inkebemelmans.be you can find a collection of her paintings, digital illustrations and poems.

View allThis artwork begins as a spontaneous drawing with an acrylic pen: raw, instinctive, and grounded in the tactile act of mark-making. From there, I transition it into the digital realm, photographing the original line work and importing it into Adobe Illustrator. The shift from analog to vector allowed me to refine the composition and explore bold color relationships, while still honoring the imperfections and rhythm of the hand-drawn original.
These works blend influences from surrealism (for its dreamlike, central abstract figure), street art or graffiti (due to the bold outlines and marker-like textures), and digital futurism (evident in the vector finish and crisp color fills).
I view my process as a kind of hybrid ritual, an open dialogue between the analog and digital, intuition and precision. Each piece I create invites the viewer to decode, interpret, and connect through their own layered perceptions.

What I like about Kandinsky, Hergé, Alechinsky and Patti
Wassily Kandinsky, for his wonderful paintings and his view on abstract art and spirituality, his quote "the artist must train not only his eye but also his soul"
Hergé (known for "The adventures of Tintin") for his distinct "clear line" drawing style.
Pierre Alechinsky, for his beautiful graphics, his apparant anarchism, the wild imagination of his boundaries.
Patti Smith, for her lyrics and her androgynous style and energy, her dream of life.
