Son précepteur, Gustave Arosa, homme d’affaires et grand amateur d’art, a présenté Gauguin aux impressionnistes. En 1874, il rencontre le peintre Camille Pissarro et assiste à la première exposition du mouvement impressionniste. Comme son précepteur, il est devenu un amateur d'art et a ensuite essayé de peindre. Il expose donc avec les impressionnistes en 1879, 1880.
