In 2009 Gültekin employs confident use of the whirling technique to produce a series of portraits that convey messages about life and the nature of relationships on many different levels. Gültekin uses the whirling technique to build a texture by creating many hidden portraits in each painting.
Gültekin developed the whirling technique by adapting the forms of traditional Turkish marbling (a water based technique to imprint designs onto paper). This new style of oil painting generates a similar visual effect to marbling although with a very high gloss finish . In many of these artworks we also see the emergence of a ripple texture that gives the works an appearance of a ceramic finish.

The Carved Wood series is the main body of works produced in 2011. These paintings are a progression from the first wood series, which was borne out of the artist’s idea to free himself from the convention of painting within a rectangular frame. Gültekin then decided to try to create multiple compositions by carving the wooden outlines and creating images within and across these shapes. Many of the artworks are composed of two or three pieces of carved wood in a planned arrangement. Some of these works are painted directly onto the prepared and undercoated wood; others are covered in canvas.
The early carved wood paintings employ the whirling technique. However the artist begins to create the dissolve technique by experimenting with various combinations of cedar resin, oil paint, and alkyds. The later carved wood paintings reveal a mixture of dissolve, whirling and sgrafitto techniques.

This Gallery contains two series of paintings produced during 2010. The “whirling” technique is very fully developed in all of the works. Gültekin developed the whirling technique as a new style of oil painting. He did this by adapting the forms of traditional Turkish marbling (a water based technique to imprint designs onto paper). The result generates a similar visual effect to marbling although the technique is entirely different.
Beautiful Seeds of Destruction Series - These paintings are inspired by the artist’s response to the impact of serious illness on the lives of others. Research using electron microscopy has revealed that many diseases look beautiful in appearance. The art works contrast the visual patterns of disease with the Gültekin’s interpretation of the emotional and physical devastation they create within their human hosts. The high gloss whirling technique is contrasted with other matt textures to emphasise the difference between the disease and it effect on the host. The main underlying metaphor is that destructive elements exist within the wider community and these can suddenly flare up and spread like infections.
Inner Life Series - These paintings depict different aspects of inner life. Some are inspired by discovery, others by music and some convey an inner sense of the energy that drives humans forward in life.

This first wood series of paintings was borne out of the artist’s idea to free himself from the convention of painting within a rectangular frame. He purchased the trunk of a Cedar Tree and had it sliced and planed both horizontally and vertically. The resulting range of natural shapes provides an irregular and unique frame for each painting . Some of these art works are painted directly onto the prepared and undercoated wood; others are covered in canvas. All of these art works employ the whirling technique.
Gültekin developed the “whirling” technique as a new style of oil painting. He did this by adapting the forms of traditional Turkish marbling (a water based technique to imprint designs onto paper). The result generates a similar visual effect to marbling although often with a very high gloss finish that almost looks like ceramic. In many of the art works the high gloss whirling technique is contrasted with other matt textures to create a stunning visual impact.
