Gerhard Benz was born in Cuxhaven.
He studied architecture and art history in Aachen and Halifax, Canada, then in the master class at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Later he took on teaching positions for scenography at the HfG Karlsruhe and the HdK Zurich, as well as for design and temporary construction at the FH Düsseldorf.
He has received a number of awards. In Vienna he was a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service, in 1992/93 he was a prizewinner of the 'Villa Massimo' at the German Academy in Rome; in 1995 he received a work scholarship from the NRW Ministry of Culture, and in 2001 he spent time in Ein Hod in Israel as part of a cultural exchange. Since 1982 he has worked as a stage designer and scenographer on numerous productions throughout Europe - for example at the Vienna, Berlin and Novosibirsk State Operas, the Frankfurt Theater am Turm, the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus and the Munich Residenztheater, and theater festivals in Germany, France and Italy. He wrote scripts and directed himself. He also worked as a visual artist, architect and designer. A considerable number of exhibitions and accompanying publications, catalogs and artist books document his innovative activities in the field of photography and as a creator of spatial and sound installations.
'Gerhard Benz is an artist who disregards the traditional boundaries of disciplines and media and thereby finds new forms of visual communication' (quote from the introductory speech to the exhibition 'Meer Seen' by Dr. Jürgen Schilling, Berlin).
