On September 29, 1703, in Paris, France, Francois Boucher was born. He was French and he painted, decorated theaters, and drew pictures for books.Nicolas Boucher, Francois's father, was a design draftsman and a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc. He taught his son Francois the basics of painting. At the beginning of the 1720s, he studied briefly with Francois Lemoyne, who was one of the best historical painters at the time. The Grand Prix of the Arts for 1723 was given to Francois Boucher. Still, he didn't get one of the seats at the French Academy in Rome, which was a big disappointment. Then he went to the house of the engraver Jean Francois Cars to learn how to make prints. This led him to print publisher Jean de Jullienne, for whom he made many etchings and prints. In 1731, the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture accepted Francois Boucher as a history painter. In 1742, the king made him a court painter, and in 1761, he was made the head of the royal academy. Around 1765, King Louis XV made him the first painter of the king's court. He made things like decorations for royal castles and paintings for the private rooms of the royal family. The works of Jean-Antoine Watteau, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and Peter Paul Rubens were important to the artist. He was very passionate about painting nature and landscapes. He also liked painting portraits of wealthy clients or the naked bodies of women. He used lots of color and detail in his paintings. His style is graceful and gallant, with scenes that are quiet, mythological, and symbolic. He played with soft colors and soft shapes in an elegant way.Francois Boucher passed away in Paris on May 30, 1770. His name, like that of his patron Madame de Pompadour, and his works are the perfect example of French Rococo.
