Wayne Sleeth
I am a painter and arts educator dividing my time between England and France. Primarily, l'm working according to my 'synaesthetics' of places lived, frequented or visited fleetingly. Travel is a prime mover for me, followed by intense work in the studio in rural France.
Much travelled, I have exhibited throughout Europe (London and the north-east of England, but also Brussels, Berlin, Metz, Stuttgart, Split...) and permanently in Paris and Metz. I have work in collections throughout Britain, mainland Europe, Asia and the US.
Since january 2015, l have been basing paintings on the themes and locations central to the work of Claude Monet in France, a great inspiration; Giverny and his waterlily pond, the Normandy countryside, but also - as a kind of inverse pilgrimage - returning regularly to London to paint Westminster and the Thames, again with contemporary tools to hand; polaroid and collage, spraypaint and marker pens.
A common thread in my choice of motifs is water, it seems. In the paintings of Monet and the muddy reflections of the Thames is another interpretation of an otherwise familiar motif, a changeable, fleeting, underlying abstraction of the figurative world. It is that which l seek to fix and immortalise.

Article
" These are neither (land)scapes nor (sea)scapes, but ‘scapes’; anagrams of certain ‘spaces’."
In his mature work since moving to the Lorraine region of France in 2001, Wayne Sleeth reiterates and re-explores the source and schema of his more formative sensations; the big skies above the flat lands of both the Lincolnshire coast of his father and the polders of maternal Flanders, where he also spent his childhood. The Lorraine region for this confirmed European is not only geographically strategic, but offers an echo of that very play of horizontality and verticality where the artist draws freely on “l’espace” as he knows and feels it, as far as the canvas edge…
" ...The working and reworking of the canvases, the adding, subtracting and paring away at every composition is more than necessary; the physical act of painting is a way of orientating myself, covering and recovering ‘ground’ until l arrive at a conclusion of senses. I never know exactly where a canvas will lead me (l rarely work from sketches or photographs) but there is a clear moment for me when the work is 'finished', l arrive at a hiatus or a revelation of sorts ; l realise, sometimes blatantly, where l have been all that time, the episode and the moment 'fixed'.
Sometimes the title of a piece refers to a particular space or place as the motivation for the piece; something of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, of the Lorraine region where l now live and work, of the Atlantic, of Cornwall, of Sicily, of London, of Flanders.... The painting could equally evoke that somewhere else very close we have all come across, which we can only rediscover, intuitively, through a complex series of signs and subtleties, that which l find through the act of painting itself. " ...
They are neither about land nor sea nor skies, but those spaces colour, line and texture inhabit, make their own, or escape. "
" Chasseur d'Emotions "
