D'origine métissée afro-américaine et amérindienne des Appalaches, elle est souvent considérée comme la première célébrité noire. Elle prend la nationalité française en 1937 et, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, joue un rôle important dans la résistance à l'occupant. Elle utilisera ensuite sa grande popularité dans la lutte contre le racisme, et pour l'émancipation des Noirs, en particulier en soutenant le Mouvement des droits civiques de Martin Luther King.
