A snowy landscape at dawn is so appeasing to look at, especially if one is tucked up warm inside and winter view from the window is bleak but far from bland. The blue grey tones along with the soft ochre and violet hues intensifies the freezing cold. It bring back memories in childhood when we work up to find the landscape covered a a blanket of white. The poem by John Greenleaf Whittler sums up this painting very well:
"The sun that brief December day
Rose cheerless over the hills of gray
And, darkly circled, gave at noon
A sadder light than waning moon.
Slow tracing down the thickening sky
Its mute and ominous prophecy,
A portent seeming less than threat
It sank from sight before it set.

In snow, the story does not show, the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter, something beneath it stays buried and in the silence, the snow has all the answers!

Watercolor

Watercolor is a painting in which gum arabic binds transparent pigments revealing the support of the painting. The gouache, of identical composition, is opaque. A watercolor is a water-based painting on paper. We rarely speak of a painting for a work painted in watercolor.
