A bit of explanation about this piece. I wasted ten years of my life with an aggressive alcoholic and. having been ejected from her Croydon flat at three in the morning, Through night trains, night buses and in the end several hours' walk, I staggered back to my London flat after dawn: shoved my face on a flatbed scanner, and produced what you see here.

Now, you don't stay with anyone for a decade unless she has her charms: creativity, intelligence and a magnetic personality. And yet...how patronising is it to think that you can change another person, least of all a drug addict, when you can't even change yourself? Think too of yourself: your potential, your future, your own long-term safety. And unless you're so lonely that you need therapy, you'll be out of there the same day.
