Sergej Jakovlev

Gothenburg (Angered), Sweden
Artist (Painting, Installation)
Born 1958

stopped my studies at the technical university in 1980, when I have decided to devote myself to art. My teacher Vitaly Stasevich, on the speciality of Fine Arts at the pedagogical university (where I studied in 1981-1986), helped me to understand that this devotion could be a meaning of my life. The life of my teacher and friend Victor Reikhet, professor of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (where I studied in 1987-1993), was a complete realization of such meaning. Since 1995 I am a member of Professional Creative Artist's Union of IFA (UNESCO). Now I am a painter in Sweden, president of the non-profit cultural organization International Society of Artists (geocities.c0m/i_societyofartists)

PHILOSOPHY AND CONCEPT
Art is unable to be a server or material. It is also not peculiar to man to be a means.
Man is always the purpose.
An artist's life is a struggle without stone in heart. It is a struggle for the rights of art in people's consciousness.

THE GOALS AND STRATEGY OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF ARTISTS

THE ARTISTS' STATEMENT
geocities.c0m/i_societyofartists

Now is the time to talk about the destiny of Art globally. Andre Malraux said concerning our time: " The 21st century will be spiritual, or it will be nothing". In contemporary society, when spiritual vacuum can be filled up by horror, one can understand the prophecy of Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "Beauty will save the World".

People are tired of politics and business, because a Human Being is not a machine or robot feeding his/her own physical existence only. People must have an alternative. What should be giving us a real feeling of life? On what terms do society and communication function? Art is the ONLY alternative because of its unlimited capacity to investigate deeply an understanding of what a Man should be.

Art appears in communication between artists and the world. If Art could be widely related to People, then much of inspiration would be born. A better understanding of the role of Art could help in the contemporary world.

The existing art market is mostly not responsible for the destiny of Art. Art is considered just another commodity or product. The talented artists, who have devoted their lives to art completely, are sometimes unable to earn a living by their professional work. The lives of many true artists are impossible. Besides the taxes equal to the taxes for traders, they must pay the huge percentage to the loca...

ARTICLE BY TERESA PEIPINS
(Teresa Peipins is a writer living in Barcelona)
Three years ago when Edvard Munch´s The Scream was stolen from a Norwegian museum, the story was on every news channel and every newspaper around the world. What happens when a major art theft happens right here in the Barrio Gothico of Barcelona?
The art gallery Art-Works located in Calle Paradis, 3, run by Toni Van Schiak, of Holland operated from 2005 to 2006. Van Schiak convinced more than 25 artists from countries ranging from Brazil to France to Spain to leave paintings in deposit or to exhibit in his space. He used the International Society of Artists (ISA) to contact independent artists from around Europe. The artists brought in their pieces never imagining what would happen.
In June 2006 Van Schiak literally disappeared leaving behind a trail of debts and unpaid rent on the gallery for several months. None of the artists were aware of what was happening until the end of June when Sergej Jakovlev, a painter living in Sweden, tried to contact Van Schiak and became suspicious when he got no response. He quickly advised the other painters.
The gallery remained closed under court order until the judge ordered it open on May 30th, 2007.
Several of the affected artists residing in Barcelona arrived, hoping to find their paintings and artworks still in the abandoned gallery. But as one artist, Juan Luis Quintana stated, ¨the gallery was as empty as a black hole.¨ The disappointed artists tried to organize the next move with Quintana publishing a webpage with a list of the stolen art and names of the painters. Lawsuits were already being filed against Toni Van Schiak in France, Holland, Spain, Sweden and other countries.
What happened to all those paintings? According to Xavier Armengue, lawyer representing the estate agency, surveillance cameras set up to keep watch on the residence of the president of the Generalitat, located on the same street, showed a truck pull up to the gallery. It´s supposed the truck was driven by a friend of Van Schiak´s and carried away the contents of the gallery. Those affected believe the stolen art was taken to Holland and perhaps sold there.
Despite the lawsuits filed and the fact the police know Van Schiak´s new residence in Torremolinos, no police action has yet been taken against him. Will justice prevail or will Van Schiak get away with stealing 200 pieces of artwork from artists around the world valued at about 250,000 euros? Will he dare to open a new gallery and get away with major art theft again?
